Juerg Luterbacher

Prof. Jürg Luterbacher holds the chair in climatology, climate dynamics and climate change at the department of Geography, Justus Liebig University Giessen. He did his PhD at the University of Bern, Switzerland. Within his international and interdisciplinary team innovative statistical methods are developed and applied to reconstruct past climate and use information from climate models to understand the dynamics and physical processes of past, present and future climate. Prof. Luterbacher also analyses weather and climate extremes (e.g. heat waves, hydroclimatic extremes such as floodings, droughts) and novel methods to downscale extremes to regional/local scales with potential applications and impact studies. His research has been conducted in the frame of various EU, DFG and Hessian funded projects where he acted as the PI. He was lead author of the palaeo-chapter within the 5th IPCC assessment report. He has 180 peer reviewed publications and a h-index of 58.
